Da Vinci Code
I've been getting emails lately from one of old friends, "warning" me about the upcoming release of the Da Vinci Code movie. His Catholic group to which he belongs is deeply concerned about this "blasphemous" movie and they are trying to organize a boycott. My friend warns me not to watch the movie, buy the book, or purchase anything which could somehow funnel funds to these heathens (aka Sony Pictures).
My friend considers the Bible to be the ultimate truth and he is horrified that this movie/novel is offering alternative theories regarding the life of Jesus. My dilemma is that if you believe that the Bible is infallible, and is the ultimate truth then you should not be scared or concerned when people question it. Real truth holds up to skepticism, real truth can and should be questioned because in the end, if it is really true then all the questioning and analysis in the world would only work to prove it more.
When I see people getting all bent out of shape, I begin to wonder "What are they afraid of?", "What are they hiding?", "What don't they want us to find out about?" Truth doesn't put you on the defensive, truth means never having to worry!
Banning movies! Banning books! I mean really, what year are we living in? What's next - a book burning? How about a witch hunt? Maybe kill a couple of scientists?
It seems what these folks are really afraid of is people reading, people educating themselves, and worst of all people forming their OWN opinion -- the original sin! That is what really is going on here. When people are open minded and question things they are harder to control and we all know that is bad for business.
Now, to my knowledge the author of the Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown, hasn't killed anyone, started wars, ordered people's deaths or raped young children. The folks who are "warning" me about this movie don't have such a good track record as Mr. Brown so I think I'll be heading to the theater this weekend.
